About

I'm a Game Designer at NCsoft Europe. This is my personal blog with my totally personal thoughts on video games. ABOUT PAGE

Some of my friends were talking about how much they love SingStar. I’ve never played it, and I said I was curious how I’d score in this game as I usually don’t sing unless I’m in the shower.

gameslol-post.jpgHmmm. Many people sing in the shower. It is a widespread phenomenon. I know this because I looked it up on Wikipedia: “Bathroom singing, also known as singing in the bathroom, singing in the bath, or singing in the shower is a widespread phenomenon.”

Anyway, it had me thinking…

Singing in the shower is fun, but don’t you ever wish you could remember the actual complete lyrics of a song instead of just singing whatever is stuck in your head at the time? I love singing the Katamari Damacy theme song but I can only ever remember the line “picnic kibun feel so goooooo”, and then I have to awkwardly hum the rest of it, and it’s just… terrible. But what if you could have the lyrics right there in the shower when you most need them? Or what if you could spend your shower singing sessions more productively by raising high scores, unlocking new content and even completing voice coaching tutorials?

What the world clearly wants — needs! — is some kind of water resistant karaoke box with LCD screen. And possibly a microphone that sticks to the bathroom ceiling. I have no idea how this would actually ever work but I’m going to apply for a patent immediately.

The game could be called SingStar Shower, or maybe Bathroom Singing Training. There’s probably millions of people singing in the shower who are not maximizing their fun potential. Talk about expanding the market! Million+ sales guaranteed!

There’s already an obvious new feature to include in the second version. The most recent SingStar allows you to record a video of yourself playing the game and then post it to YouTube. Hey, wouldn’t this be far more interesting if everyone were naked?

I’m going to be rich.

  1. this actually IS a great idea ;)! You can sing along all you want and turn up the volume whenever you’re an ‘ off key’ singer, to overcome the sound of shattering glass somewhere in your house.. :P

  2. And if we recorded it, I could torture my parents all day!

It’s an interesting idea though. I mean using that kind of fun from real-life and exploiting it in a game. Good one, Mr. Bronstring.

  4. I’d be into some kind of shower based DDR perhaps, hmm actually that could be dangerous, let’s stick to the singing.

  5. Holy shit, I’m in. That sounds amazingly fun. Plus, it would allow me to get in a little gaming time even on days when I’m too busy to turn on a console. After all, gotta bathe. Why not game while I do it? You’ve hit on a fantastic idea here. I really hope you or someone reading this makes it happen. If it goes over well, it could very well become a standard installation in the homes of the future.

  6. Shower based DDR might work with a grab rail and some holes about as wide as your foot is long; that way you slip everytime but into a standing position.

It’d be like DDR crossed with jumping in puddles :)

  7. Also, electrocution. DDR + jumping in puddles + electric shock.

    Honestly, could still be fun.

  8. Add a towel whip and you’ll essentially have a PainStation.
