I’ve been writing far too many editorials. Time for some snacks:
Remember Another World? EuroGamer has interviewed Eric Chahi. Now there’s a guy I’d love to see return to the industry. (By the way, Idle Thumbs was first to interview him after years of obscurity.)- Project Horseshoe is, apparently, an exclusive mini-conference that aims to “positively influence the art and science of game design”. They’ve published some reports from their November conference. I’ve only read the one called Building Innovative Games That Sell. The two diagrams are spot-on. More at Lost Garden.
- Steve digs through GDC sessions. This year’s offering is utterly intimidating. Wanted: cloning device.
- Okami and Dead Rising (and, last year, Resident Evil 4) weren’t nominated by the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences for their annual awards, despite many write-ins, because Capcom didn’t pay them money. GameSpot asked Capcom for a statement and what they got was a mini essay on game awards. It’s great that Capcom openly questions the AIAS’ credibility. Game award shows are pretty much a joke except for the incredible Developer’s Choice Awards and maybe the BAFTAs.
- I spent most of high school math class trying to invent new noises with my mouth, so this GamaSutra article series on probability and statistics is a great refresher course (and it’s surprisingly entertaining). I’m not a math or D&D guy so dice rolls always make my brains explode.
- Should I feel bad about playing Texas hold’em on a €400 high-definition console instead of Viva Piñata or Gears of War?
That’s it for now! Saw something interesting on the internets? Let me know in the comments!
Hey, my name is Marek Bronstring and I'm a game designer. I most recently worked at NCsoft Europe. I'm interested in many kinds of games but have worked mostly on online games, so that's what I tend to write about. My top 3 favorite animals: 1) meerkats 2)
Hmm, interesting point; should I feel guilty for playing freeware developed in under a month on a £1,200 laptop?
I say it’s down to how much fun you’re getting for your money — and the realisation that you don’t have to spend a fortune on software to enjoy everything video gaming has to offer you.

The stage gate process articles are a really good find, thanks.

Even though we have a game in DICE this year, and I hope we win etc etc, I’m glad Capcom is continuing to make a stink about the entry fees. It really cheapens the awards.

I don’t think you should feel bad, Marek.. but you are definitely at the epicenter of an intense irony spike
