Marek Bronstring’s game blog

It's-a-me Hi, I'm a Game Designer at NCsoft Europe. Entertainer available for children's parties. ABOUT PAGE

This year’s GDC will rock my world a thousand times, which is a little more than the usual amount of times. I’m already giddily counting down the days, and they haven’t begun even announcing the keynotes yet.

Looking at the sessions confirmed so far, two things stick out in particular. A lot of Japanese speakers are attending this year. There’s Tsutomu Kouno of LocoRoco, Keiichi Yano of Ouendan!, Eiji Aonuma of Zelda, Koji Kondo of Zelda’s music and Goichi Suda of Killer7 (his speech titled “Punk’s Not Dead”). Whoah.

I’m also pleased to see the first two days of the conference have been beefed up. Usually the only thing of major interest to me is the game design workshop led by Marc LeBlanc, but this year sees the introduction of a potentially amazing two-day independent games summit. It’s already a treasure trove of sessions.

The indie scene has brought forward many new representatives in the last few years that are now getting more and more recognition. I’m excited. I’m also a little surprised to see David Jaffe on that list. While Calling All Cars is a cool small game it’s being made at SCEA Santa Monica, which is the opposite of indie, but I know I shouldn’t jump to any conclusions.

  1. Whoops they’ve just announced that Miyamoto will be giving the main keynote presentation. Oh man. http://www.shacknews.com/ja.zz?comments=45430 A big step up from Ron Moore (no offense, Marek)

  2. Yeah I shat my pants over that announcement just a few minutes ago.

Ron Moore is a God but I do agree that he’s part of a different pantheon.
